Our Story

The Down Syndrome Association of Houston has been serving individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the members of the Greater Houston community who support them since 1974.  DSAH was founded when there was very little information or focus on the diagnosis of Down syndrome.

In response, a group of caring mothers decided that Houston needed an organization to do just that – focus solely on being a resource center for families. Join us as we create a Greater Houston where individuals with Down syndrome feel included and are empowered to fulfill their personal goals and aspirations.

The Hear and Here program.

In 2025 the Down Syndrome Association of Houston is going to be even more intentional about listening to and being present for the individuals and families we serve. One way we are going to do that is through our ‘Hear and Here’ program led by new Program Coordinator and Bilingual Psychologist Ana Ortiz. Along with organizing community gatherings throughout Greater Houston and at our new home, the Center for Pursuit, and connecting families with needed resources, Ana will be hosting one-on-one and small group meetings, in person and virtually, in English and in Spanish, so that she can spend time listening to and better understanding our members. The hope is, if we provide a safe space for people to share their feelings, thoughts and experiences with us, we will be better positioned as an organization to provide assistance. You can contact Ana at aportiz@dsah.org if you have questions or want to get involved.
