Expressive Musical Entertainment!

The Down Syndrome Association of Houston (DSAH) Pantomime Troupe has been entertaining the Houston community since 2010.  The Troupe consists entirely of adults with Down syndrome who share a love of music, creative movement, and performing for others. 0133-IMG_2014_05_17_041556

Under the Artistic Direction of Julithe Garrett and his MimaShow, the Troupe has performed at Jones Hall, the Goodwill corporate offices, the Houston Buddy Walk, and various other DSAH events.  Mr. Garrett has over 20 years of experience working with special-needs performers and enjoys giving them an opportunity to shine in their own way.  He believes that learning to use gestures to communicate actions and emotions is particularly beneficial to individuals with Down syndrome, who often have some degree of speech impairment.

Mr. Garrett has seen his students thrive and develop greater self-confidence as they learn and demonstrate Pantomime techniques and discover the depth of their inner creativity.

Pantomime Classes and Performing Troupe rehearsals are offered at our Down Syndrome Resource Center (RC)  located at 7115 W. Tidwell, Bldg. K Suite 106 Houston, TX 77092. There are approximately 20 to 25 students during instruction time.

Pantomime Schedules

20150429_093049Pantomime Classes – These are offered on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. In our Pantomime Classes, Artistic Director Julithe Garrett instructs students on techniques, steps, and refining movements.  By being part of the classes, students have the opportunity to perform at the World Down Syndrome Celebration as well as the Houston Buddy Walk!

Pantomime Performing Troupe – The Pantomime Troupe performers will meet on Mondays from 4:00pm to 5:30pm to rehearse full routines which they will perform. This hour and a half rehearsal is only for the Performing Troupe which is different from the Wednesday classes.

How can your son/daughter be eligible for the Pantomime Performing Troupe?  After two semesters of Pantomime Classes, he/she will audition with Mr. Garrett and, if chosen, must commit to the following:

  • BUD_8192
  • Pay the $50 Pantomime Performing Troupe costume fee
  • Attend 75% of all Monday rehearsals from 4:00pm to 5:30pm
  • Attend 75% of all Wednesday classes from 4:00pm to 5:30pm
  • Attend 90% of all performances

By separating these two options, we are able to serve more participants in our classes and have an established Performing Troupe of 10 performers that can be readily available to represent DSAH at various community events.
